Following a preliminary hearing yesterday, Judge Marlene Morais, head of Panama's Twelfth Penal Circuit Court, announced the opening of a trial at which the accused will face charges for abuse of authority. The three officials include ex Minister of Government and Justice Arnulfo Escalona, ex National Police Director Carlos Bares and ex assistant director of Migration Javier Tapia, who were called for the January 18,2008 hearing. Posada Carriles, Gaspar Jimenez, Pedro Remon and Guillermo Novo were serving sentences for plotting the assassination of Cuban President Fidel Castro at a public act during the 10th Latin American Summit, held in November 2000 in Panama City. Despite the serious charges and his status as fugitive from a prison in Venezuela, where he was tried for blowing-up a Cubana Airline airplane in which 73 passengers died, Moscoso pardoned Posada Carriles. However, the leading attorney of the Panamanian Anti-Corruption Division, Mercedes De Leon, said that Posada and his accomplices were released when a pardon decree had not even been published in the Official Gazette. * ================================================================= .NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems .
