Popular Block Joins Paraguayan Opposition

Asuncion, Aug 14 (Prensa Latina) Paraguayan presidential candidate,
Fernando Lugo confirmed adhesion of the Bloque Social y Popular to the
Opposition Concertacion Nacional as a unity strategy for the elections
of 2008.

Lugo, who was elected by an alliance of traditional opposition parties
to challenge officialism in power, announced that by August 27 the pact
of both will be sealed.

He explained that this move will confer a more popular and grass roots
influence to Concertacion, above purely party interests and because we
agree that we want a different country, one dreamed of by so many men
and women.

The former priest added that he is not attracted by power for power's
sake nor for money. "That is the mystique and ethics that we must
inject into politics. To date he is a forerunner among the Paraguayan
electorate.
