Nicaragua Expands Literacy Campaign with Cuban Method

Havana, August 9 (acn) The Nicaraguan Ministry of Education announced 
on Wednesday that the penitentiary system of that Central American 
country has opened the door to the National Literacy Campaign so that 
that the penal population can also learn to read and write with the 
Cuban audiovisual method 'Yo sC- puedo' (Yes, I Can).

In a press release, the Education Ministry explained that several 
projects are being implemented in prisons across the country, including 
elementary and secondary studies.

According to Mario Rivera, director of the campaign that began last 
July, their goal is to contribute to the social reintegration of all 
those serving sentences.

Rivera added that they are also organizing a plan to teach the disabled.

The Nicaraguan literacy campaign, called "From MartC- to Fidel" as a 
sign of appreciation for Cuba's assistance, also includes the 
indigenous communities of the Atlantic coast.

More than 50 thousand people are participating in the first stage of 
the campaign. The main goal is to declare Nicaragua as a country free 
from illiteracy in the year 2009.
