Jamaican Ambassador in Cuba Praises Bilateral Relations

Havana, August 2 (acn) The government and the people of Jamaica 
appreciate their relations with Cuba, said on Wednesday Elinor M. 
Sherlock, Kingston's ambassador to Havana during a ceremony to 
commemorate the 45th anniversary of the independence of the neighboring 
nation.

The diplomat noted that the two countries work in several areas of 
cooperation and recalled that 300 Jamaicans are currently studying in 
Cuban education centers. She also referred to the more than 4,000 of 
her compatriots who have benefited from the free eye-surgery program 
Operation Miracle, promoted in the region by Cuba and Venezuela.

She also praised the work of 200 Cuban social workers who are making 
their contribution in her country as part of an energy revolution and 
also the work of the Cuban medical brigade there.

In the ceremony, held at the headquarters of the Cuban Friendship 
Institute (ICAP) in Havana, Sherlock spoke of the long path that the 
people of former Prime Minister Norman Manley had to walk before they 
got rid of the dishonorable colonial regime that ended on August 6th, 
1962.

For his part, ICAP Vice President Basilio GutiC)rrez said that the Cuban 
people will never forget that it was in the Caribbean where the 
initiative to fight Washington's isolation efforts against the Cuban 
Revolution was born.

He recalled that those efforts failed when, on December 8th, 1972, 
Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados decided to establish 
diplomatic relations with Cuba.
