The encounter took place at the Julio Antonio Mella International Camp, located in the municipality of Caimito, in Havana. Irma Sehwerert, mother of Rene Gonzalez, one of the five men, said the next step in the legal process against her son and his comrades, is an oral hearing that has been scheduled for August 30. She explained that the 11th Circuit of the Court of Appeals of Atlanta is expected to state a ruling during the hearing. Rene, along with Ramon Labanino, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Gerardo Hernandez, are called "The Cuban Five" by the international campaign fighting for their freedom. They have been imprisoned for nearly nine years now for having infiltrated Miami-based anti-Cuba organizations. Olmer and Aili Labanino, Ramon's father and daughter, as well as nephew Yosvel Labanino, took part in the encounter. The 38th contingent of the Venceremos brigade from the United States arrived in Cuba last July 13.
