The DPA news agency noted that in an article published on Friday in the Cuban press, President Castro expressed his "deepest sorrow to the people of Brazil regarding the tragic aviation accident, in which close to 200 people perished in the midst of the joy-filled Pan-American Games." Mexico's Notimex and the Italian ANSA news agencies also pointed out that the Cuban leader expressed his deepest sorrow for the tragic plane crash. Likewise, AP news agency echoed the message of Fidel to the Brazilian people with regard to the accident suffered by an Airbus-320 of the TAM airline. The plane, which was en route from the city of Porto Alegre with 186 passengers, lost control at the airport in Congonhas, Sao Paulo, leaving the landing strip and crashing into a 3-story building and a gasoline deposit.
