Evo Morales to Nationalize Bolivian Railroad

Havana, July 18 (acn) Bolivian President Evo Morales announced Tuesday 
that he will revert the process of privatization, known as 
"capitalization" in Bolivia, under which the former state rail company 
Empresa Nacional de Ferrocarriles (ENFE) fell into private hands in 
1996.

"Let the people who promised capitalization tell us where the fruits of 
that process are. There never was capitalization, but instead the 
de-capitalization of the Bolivian people and our state firms. That's 
why we are beginning the nationalization of ENFE," said Morales who 
also questioned the benefits of the privatization of the railroads to 
the Chilean and US investors.

The Bolivian president made his statements at the opening of a tourist 
steam train route outside La Paz, which runs between the altiplano port 
town of Guaqui on the bank of Lake Titicaca to the pre-Columbian 
citadel of Tiwanaku, reports Granma newspaper.

Morales nationalized hydrocarbons back in May 2006, and is in 
arbitration with the Italian telecommunications firm Telecom to obtain 
majority control over the national telephone company ENTEL.
