Guatemalan Doctors to Graduate in Cuba

Havana, July 16 (acn) Some 90 Guatemalan students from Havana's  Latin 
American School of Medicine (ELAM) will return to the Cuban capital to 
receive their diplomas after concluding their final semester in remote 
places in that Central American nation.

They will add to the more than 300 Guatemalan graduates who have 
completed their studies in rural areas thanks to assistance of a Cuban 
medical international brigade, reports PL news agency.

During the farewell ceremony, the coordinator of the Cuban medical 
brigade, Yoandra Muro, praised the excellent academic results, values 
and discipline of the Guatemalan med students.

One of the graduates, Otoniel Barrios, thanked the Cuban people and 
President Fidel Castro for giving low-income students the opportunity 
to become doctors.

The president of the ELAM Parents Association, Maria Teresa de Leon, 
praised the island's scholarships program.

She also underlined the success of the Miracle Operation eye-surgery 
project promoted by Cuba and which has returned the sight to thousands 
of low-income patients in the region with curable eye diseases.
