University Chair Created in Havana to Honor Former Dominican President

Havana, July 13 (acn) Dominican President Leonel FernC!ndez thanked Cuba 
for the creation on the island of the Juan Bosch University Chair to 
promote the work of the former Dominican leader.

"For us, it is an honor that the University of Havana decided to open 
this institution named after Professor Bosch, in recognition of his 
work as a writer, a humanist, and a thinker," wrote FernC!ndez in a 
letter read by the Dominican ambassador to Havana, Daniel Guerrero, 
during a ceremony held at the Main Hall of the University of Havana on 
Thursday.

During the ceremony, the Rector of the University, RubC)n Sardoya, 
announced the creation of the new chair at the Faculty of History and 
Philosophy, which is formed by personalities of the University of 
Havana, the Casa de las AmC)ricas Cultural Center and the Cuban Union of 
Writers and Artists, among others.

For his part, the Secretary of State of the Dominican Republic, Miguel 
MejC-a, described the creation of the Juan Bosch Chair as a historic 
landmark and added that it will promote post-graduate courses, 
researches, exchanges and books related to the cultural-historic ties 
between Cuba and the Dominican Republic.

Juan Emilio Bosch y GaviC1o (1909-2001) won the 1963 presidential 
elections in the Dominican Republic but was overthrown only seven 
months after assuming his post by a U.S.-backed coup d'C)tat.
