Cuba Has More Teachers Than Ever

Ciego de Cvila, July 10  (AIN) Cuba has over 325.000 teachers, a number 
without precedent in the history of the island's educational system, 
said Cuban Minister of Education, Luis Ignacio GC3mez GutiC)rrez, on 
Tuesday.

During the closing ceremony of the 2007-2008 school year in this 
central province of Ciego de Avila, Gomez Gutierrez noted that Cuba 
boasts the widest educational coverage around the world -one teacher 
per 36 inhabitants.

Before the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, there were only 22.000 
teachers in the island, half of them unemployed, said the Minister.

The Cuban official classified the school year just finished as very 
satisfactory and announced that next year will be better. He said the 
participation of many teachers on post-graduate courses proves the 
progress of the island in the training of its professionals.

He also pointed out that some 1,800 educational centers have been 
restored over the last eight years as part of the intensive ideological 
onslaught undertaken by the Cuban people.
