Report Reveals New Colombian Peso Feeds Deficit

Bogota, Jul 7 (Prensa Latina) The reevaluation of the Colombian peso
leads to a strong increase of the deficit of the commercial balance of
the country, because of increased import s, said a report published
here Saturday.

A report of the National Statistics Department (DANE) revealed that in
the first four months of the year, the value of import operations went
up 30 percent, from 7.6 billion dollars in the first four months of
2006 to 9.856 billion in 2007.

Purchases of vehicles and spare parts rose almost 62 percent, and the
reevaluation has strongly fostered the purchase of appliances and other
things, which increased 35 percent.

Data from the Bank of the Republic said Colombia accumulated a deficit
in the payment balance of 1.79 billion dollars.
