Havana Records Lowest Infant Mortality Rate in Its History

Specialists point to this as being the result of the joint work of all
those involved in the socialized Cuban healthcare system b workers,
families, the government, as well as political and mass organizations
in the neighborhood and all management levels

Havana ended the first semester of this year with an infant mortality
rate of 4.4 for every 1,000 live births, the lowest rate in the citybs
history and lower than the 4.6 rare achieved in comparison to the first
half of 2006.

Dr. Yamila de Armas, the vice director of medical services in the
province, added that the rates of late-term fetal mortality, mother
mortality and low-weight births have also decreased.

The specialist said that all this is the result of the joint work of
all those involved in the socialized healthcare system b workers,
families, government, as well as political and mass organizations in
the neighborhood and all management levels.

Dr. De Armas pointed out that the Havana neighborhoods of Plaza de la
Revolucion, with zero infant mortality rate; Playa with 1.8, and Cerro
with 2.3, have performed best so far.

However, the doctor warned that July and August are the months of
greatest risk, and therefore prevention efforts will be intensified at
all levels.
