Ninth Cuba-Mexico Inter-parliamentary Conference Begins in Havana

Havana, July 6 (acn) The 9th Cuba-Mexico Inter-parliamentary Conference 
was inaugurated in havana on Thursday by the President of the Cuban 
Parliament Ricardo AlarcC3n and by Mexican Senate leader Manlio Fabio 
Beltrones.

Beltrones, who is accompanied by a large delegation of Mexican senators 
and House representatives, expressed his interest in encouraging 
bilateral relations and stressed that nothing justifies the distancing 
between two sister nations.

According to Beltrones, the composition of the Mexican delegation 
reflects their purpose of urging the Mexican federal government to 
fully re-establish and strengthen its ties with the island.

The Mexican legislator noted that the Mexican Congress is particularly 
interested in coordinating positions with Cuba prior to international 
events such as the upcoming meeting of the working group of the 
Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly.

For his part, AlarcC3n referred to common positions traditionally held 
by both countries such as non-interference in other countries' domestic 
affairs, defense of national sovereignty, self-determination and Latin 
American solidarity.

Also present were Havana City Historian Eusebio Leal, who heads the 
Cuba-Mexico Friendship Parliamentary Group, and CC)sar Leal, President 
of the Foreign Affairs Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean 
in the Mexican Senate.

The three-day conference will focus on bilateral cooperation in the 
education, cultural and health sectors, as well as international 
parliamentary institutions, cooperation with natural disasters, 
environmental protection and efforts in civil defense.
