Ecuador Carving out New Democracy

Quito, Jul 5 (Prensa Latina) Political and economic reforms are the
main proposals boosted by the Ecuadorian government in the future
Constituent Assembly, to be established on October 30.

Those proposals were made by Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa to the
National Higher Education Council, which is in charge of drawing up a
draft for the new Constitution.

Correa considers the Assembly important and historical for the country,
and its success "will depend on the people s support to achieve
significant changes." "If citizens elect the same politicians as on
September 30, the nation will remain in the same situation it was
before January 15 last year, with rising prices of electricity, water,
privatizations, and the handing over of sovereignty to foreign powers,"
said Correa.

He said the country has to go from a pseudo representative democracy to
a participatory democracy, to elect legislators by district, so that
each region of the country has its own representatives.

Correa Denounces Destabilization Plan

Quito, Jul 5 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorian president, Rafael Correa,
denounced the destabilization campaign against his government by
certain right wing power groups.

The artificial scarcity of domestic gas and other actions are part of
the strategy of the right in its "impotence in facing a patriotic
government,"

Correa stressed." Remember the 70s in Chile where there was a great
shortage of many products," he said.

He pointed out that current claims of gas shortage are not justified
and cannot continue. Consequently he demanded "clear accounts" and will
even request resignations if it is not stopped.

The president warned that there are many things still in the hands of
the oligarchy such as the Banks and mass media.

Correa called on the Ecuadorian people to "prepare for this and much
more," and insisted that the decision of the government is to confront
and fight the repressive powers.

Ecuadorian President Slams Oligarchy for Gas Shortages

Havana, July 5 (acn) Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa put the blame 
on the country's right-wing oligarchy for the shortages of domestic gas 
supply affecting his nation and aiming to destabilize the government.

Speaking on a local radio station, Correa told the people to be 
prepared for further shortages of gas caused by sectors opposed to his 
government which abuse the power that they still have.

"We must be prepared for these things and much more. The tactic of the 
oligarchy is to create an artificial crisis. Remember the 1970s,  in 
Chile. Not long ago in Venezuela, when PDVSA [the state oil company] 
was boycotted, there was three-month period without oil production," 
said Correa in the radio interview.

The shortage of domestic gas began last weekend and is the second 
during Correa's six months in office, reports Granma newspaper.
