"We have to analyze and discuss more about every detail of our identity to safeguard our most autochthonous traditions and even to defend the survival of the just society we are building," said Prieto during a meeting held in eastern Santiago de Cuba in the framework of the Caribbean Festival that is underway in that city. The minister noted that not only the popular culture of the peoples of our geographical area but also that of the United States is threatened by neo-liberal globalization and mercantilism. "The roots of American culture are also suffering with the models imposed by the big industries, particularly the filmmaking industry. That is why we are allies in this battle to preserve our traditions," he added. The meeting coincided with the 231st anniversary of the US's Independence Day, which led to discussions on the cultural identity of the North American nation. Participants also urged Latin American peoples to join efforts in order to guarantee that the future generations in the region know more about the traditions of their own countries. They also recalled the words of late researcher and founder of the Caribbean Festivals, writer and essayist Joel James, who urged the peoples to defend their identity and culture as a path towards emancipation. One of the accords of the meeting was that the 2009 edition of the Caribbean Festival will be dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution. * ================================================================ .NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems .
