Venezuela's Independence Day Marked in Cuba

Havana, Jul 5 (acn) The 196th anniversary of the independence of 
Venezuela was observed this Thursday in Cuba with a ceremony honoring 
liberation leader Simon Bolivar.

Floral wreaths were placed by the equestrian statue of the Venezuelan 
patriot in Havana by the Venezuelan ambassador to the island, the Cuban 
Friendship Institute, workers of the Industrial Bank of Venezuela in 
Havana and the Military AttachC) of the South American nation also in 
Cuba.

Speaking at the ceremony, Venezuela's ambassador Ali Rodriguez Araque 
said the idea of forging one large Latin American and Caribbean nation 
that became the source of inspiration for independence fighters such as 
Francisco de Miranda, Bolivar, and Jose Marti, among others, is 
emerging again in the region.

We share the same territory, as well as we share similar traditions, 
historical origins, language, beliefs and problems, said the diplomat, 
adding that those issues show the unitary future of "Our America".

Venezuelan Lorena Jose Guzman, second year student of medicine in 
Cienfuegos referred to the historical date. She said on July 5, 1811 
the Constituent Congress at that time announced the independence of the 
country from Spanish colonization and assured that the homeland would 
never surrender to any empire.

Present at the ceremony were Eusebio Leal, Havana's historian, members 
of the diplomatic corps accredited to Cuba and Venezuelan students and 
patients who are on the island.
