Russia, US to Reduce Strategic Weapons

Moscow, July 3 (Prensa Latina) Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov
and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice issued a joint statement
Tuesday expressing the intention to reduce strategic offensive arsenals
to the minimum. # Russia Tells US Nix Missile Shield

Washington and Moscow ratify their willingness to cut offensive
strategic weapons to the minimum allowable to secure national security
and fulfill commitments made to allies, the document says.

Both officials discussed the drafting of an agreement for the period
after the expiration of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) on
December 5, 2009.

As entrusted by the presidents, the parties will continue discussions
toward achieving concrete results as soon as possible, Rice and Lavrov
said, as quoted by RIA Novosti news agency.

The intention is reflected in new proposals made by Russian President
Vladimir Putin as an alternative to the deployment of the US missile
shield in Europe.

Russia Tells US: Nix Missile Shield

Moscow, Jul 3 (Prensa Latina) Russian anti-missile defense proposals
would be viable if the US abandons its plans to create an independent
anti-missile shield, an official source affirmed on Tuesday.

The initiatives encouraged by Russian President Vladimir Putin aim at
the White House abandoning its nuclear program in the cosmos, local
press quoted a Kremlin official as saying.

If the initiatives are materialized, there would be no need to position
missiles in Kaliningrad and other Russian regions. It would then be
senseless to direct Russian rockets toward Central Europe, the source
added.

Prior to the G-8 Summit in Germany, Putin affirmed that if Russia's
security is ever threatened, NATO countries could be potential targets
of Russian missiles.

After no concrete results of his informal meeting with US President
George W. Bush, the Russian leader suggested enlarging the number of
countries, mainly Europeans, in the fight against global threats.
