Cuban Industry Recovering after Years of Crisis

Havana, July 3 (acn) Substantial recovery on the industrial field in 
Cuba is tangible after the economic crisis that hit the island in the 
1990s.

According to sources of the sector, the Ministry of Steel and Heavy 
Equipment and Recycling saved twelve million Cuban convertible pesos 
for import substitution during the first three months of 2007.

Meanwhile, the 2006 production amounted to 2,800 million Cuban pesos 
and sales abroad translated into 130 million Cuban convertible pesos 
while a 10-million increase is expected for 2007.

Recovery from the economic crisis in this sector began in 2002 when new 
social and economic programs increased demand for steel, aluminum 
carpentry, medical equipment, electric and telephone cables, scrap 
metal, parts and engine accessories.
