Washington's hostile policy against the island has led to the weakening of the cultural bonds between Cuba and the United States, the annulment of the contracts of a number of Cuban artists, and the failure to pay several Cuban writers' royalties. The Report by Cuba on Resolution 61/11 of the United Nations General Assembly includes a chapter devoted to the negative impact of the blockade on the Cuban culture. One of the most illustrative examples of this brutal measure is the violation of an agreement over the restoration of the Hemingway Museum in Havana signed by several US organizations and the Council for the Cuban Cultural Heritage. In response to the US administration's denial of support for the project, the Cuban government assumed the expenses of the restoration of Hemingway Museum which hosts the largest legacy of the renowned writer's life and work. The absence of Cuba at the recently held International Book Fair in Puerto Rico and the Latin Grammies' Award Ceremony also show the negative impact of the blockade on the island's cultural life. Washington has also established severe travel restrictions to Cuba which prevented the choir of the San Francisco State University Chamber Singers from participating in the America Cantat, a continental event that brings together a large number of prestigious choral associations. On October 30, Cuba will present a report, for 16th time, on the necessity to put an end to the commercial, financial and economic blockade imposed by the United States on the island for almost fifty years. * ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us Our main website: http://www.blythe.org List Archives: http://blythe-systems.com/pipermail/nytr/ Subscribe: http://blythe-systems.com/mailman/listinfo/nytr =================================================================
