US Officials Encourage Division in South America

Montevideo, Jul 14 (Prensa Latina) Senator Eduardo Lorier said on
Friday that the tour of Uruguay, Chile and Brazil, made by several top
US officials, is part of a divisive strategy in South America.

Washington has the clear intention of separating, as always, of
implementing the "divide and conquer" maxim, he said.

That was the way Lorier, who is also secretary general of the Communist
Party of Uruguay, evaluated the recent tour of those countries by
"three heavyweights" of the George W. Bush administration, as they were
described by regional media.

Nicholas Burns, secretary of State for Political Affairs, and Thomas A.
Shannon, joint secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs,
visited Uruguay on Tuesday. They were followed by Secretary of Treasury
Henry Paulson on Wednesday and Thursday.

According to Lorier, the exclusion of Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador
from a meeting between some South American economy ministers and
Paulson is proof of the divisive strategy.

He warned that in the case of Uruguay, "we must realize that the United
States pointed us on a map and said, 'This country can be very
important in the objective of causing a rift and divide MERCOSUR'".

That is why we are opposing those policies, especially a Free Trade
Agreement with the United States, which would be disastrous for
Uruguayan sovereignty, he concluded.
