[NYTr] Repression and Authoritarianism Denounced in Costa Rica Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2007 20:19:03 -0500 (CDT) Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit Granma Daily - Jul 12, 2007 http://www.granma.cubaweb.cu/english/news/art54.html Persecution Denounced in Costa Rica SAN JOSE, July 11.b A climate of persecution and authoritarianism has taken hold in Costa Rica under the administration of Oscar Arias Sanchez, denounced sociologist Rogelio CedeC1o. The professor at the National Autonomous University said the best example is the campaign unleashed by big business interests and the government, in Cold War style, against the Asamblea del Pueblo (Peoplebs Assembly) political movement. Since President Oscar Arias took office it has applied a policy to criminalize citizen protests and has tried by all means to terrify independent and combative leaders, said CedeC1o. The judicial police are violating all the basic rights and freedoms guaranteed under the existing laws, emphasized the professor. The Peoplebs Assembly is an autonomous political movement whose main tool in its effort to organize local popular assemblies throughout the country is citizen participation, noted CedeC1o. Meanwhile, a group of Costa Rican doctors denounced that a Free Trade Agreement with the United States would increase the trafficking of human organs and tissues, by making them merchandise with zero tariffs, reported AFP. Public universities, social and labor organizations, farmers and small and medium business people, oppose CAFTA-DR, the Central American-Dominican Free Agreement with the United States. CAFTA-DR is supported by the Arias government and the most powerful economic groups of Costa Rica, especially the export companies. * ================================================================ .NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems .
