That date, Cuba's most important national holiday, marks the anniversary of the 1953 rebel attacks on the Moncada and Cespedes garrisons in Santiago and Bayamo that sparked the Cuban Revolution. General secretary of the Cuban Workers Federation (CTC,) Salvador Valdes Mesa, acknowledged the work of those who came out to support the campaign to eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds throughout the nation. Valdes said the effort conducted at work places contributes to combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito that transmits dengue fever. The weekend volunteer work campaign included grass cutting, collection of rubble, cleaning of ditches, sewers and septic tanks, tree trimming, as well as work at the intensive organic gardens and participation in priority construction projects. Valdes said that the Cuban labor movement works to promote this type of volunteer work in support of high priority projects and urgent tasks of the nation, a decision reached during the last CTC Congress. Labor leaders from throughout the country agreed to follow the example of Commander Ernesto "Che" Guevara, the chief promoter of volunteer work in the early years of the Revolution. Valdes added that the mobilization of workers took place in an organized manner and that concrete results were achieved. The national July 26th commemoration will take place next week in the eastern province of Camaguey. * ================================================================ .NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems .
