An official news source today said Carlos Lage and Esteban Lazo HernC!ndez, both vice presidents of the Council of State, and Foreign Minister Felipe PC)rez were among those attending. "On July 11, comrades Carlos Lage DC!vila and Esteban Lazo HernC!ndez, vice presidents of the Council of State and members of the Political Bureau, together with other leaders of the Cuban Party and government, held a meeting at the San Juan MarC-a Vianney Rectory with several of the participants in the 31st General Assembly of the Latin American Episcopal Council, led by Monsignor Raymundo Damasceno Assis, archbishop of Aparecida, Brazil, president of the Council, and Cardinal Jaime Ortega Alamino, archbishop of Havana," Granma daily newspaper reported. "Their meeting, which took place in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, served to exchange viewpoints with their visitors on the national reality, challenges facing our country, the negative effects of the blockade (imposed by the United States) on the population and the economy, and cooperation programs with Latin American countries, which we carry out in Cuba and abroad," the article said. "Those present agreed on the need for the training of Latin American professionals in Cuba to continue strengthening human values and the preservation of their beliefs, traditions and customs, so that they can return to their home communities to serve the neediest," the article continued. It also added that the Councilbs representatives and Episcopal conferences "expressed thanks for the facilities provided for their general assembly in Cuba, which concludes today with a mass at Havana Cathedral and during which its new leadership was elected." This is the first time the Council has held a meeting in Cuba. The Assembly was attended by 71 delegates from Latin America, including four cardinals. It was reported that the closed-door meeting discussed the way in which to carry out the pastoral letters issued by the Fifth General Conference held in the Brazilian city of Aparecida in mid-May, and that each countrybs situation was reviewed.
