Presidents Michelle Bachelet (Chile) and Alan Garcia (Peru) will meet in the framework of the Asia-Pacific Cooperation Forum Summit in Sydney, Australia. Belaunde pointed out that bilateral dialogue has not stopped because of the decisions of each country on the topic, and that the Peruvian government has always showed its willingness for open dialogue. Among the topics on a positive agenda, he mentioned clearing their common border of mines, the joint projection at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Group and the situation of Peruvian immigrants in Chile. He recalled that a visit of Chilean President Michelle Bachelet to Peru is scheduled for November, at the invitation of the Peruvian government and entrepreneurs. ef ccs tac mrs *** Maneuvers in Chile against Fujimori Extradition Lima, Sept 4 (Prensa Latina) Chilean opposition leader Tomas Hirsch said on Tuesday that the economic and political right wing in his country is maneuvering to prevent former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori from being extradited. In statements to the newspaper El Comercio, the ex presidential candidate and leader of the Humanist Party of Chile pointed out that the former Peruvian ruler is backed by the economic right wing that has made large investments in Peru, where Fujimori was its ally. That right wing, he added, is evidently indebted to Fujimori and is strong in Parliament, where it is subtly lobbying against the extradition of the ex president, who is accused of crimes against mankind and corruption. Hirsch said it would be very serious for Chile and for the cause of human rights in Latin America that Fujimori were not extradited, adding that such a decision lacks legal justification and would only result from direct extrajudicial pressure. He added that if Fujimori is not extradited, the Chilean government should be accused at the International Human Rights Court. In the light of an imminent ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice, Hirsch said that democrats are deeply concerned that Chile might become a safe haven for human rights violators. ef jg mrs * ================================================================= .NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems .
