Varadero's Dunes Coming Back

Varadero, Cuba, Oct 12 (Prensa Latina) Restitution of dunes is
one of the actions of greater magnitude undertaken in Varadero beach in
the last few years, said Chief of the municipality's Integrated
Management Office, Alfredo Cabrera.

Cabrera highlighted the importance of dune rehabilitation in
achieving the natural stability of the coastline of this pole, the most
important in Cuba.

The expert recalled that in late 2000, his institution, attached to the
Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, created a
multidisciplinary team of specialists.

They carried out an on-site physical-environmental diagnostic
study and identified damage to ecological quality and general
environment of the famous beach. 

Cabrera said they are currently engaged in planning and organizational
work for the use of the coastline, including strict regulations for an
optimum management of temporary facilities and liquid and solid waste.

Varadero, a 12-mile beach, is located on the Hicacos peninsula, in
northern Matanzas province, 87 miles east of Havana. It has 48 hotels
(84 percent of them four and five-star facilities) with 15,774 rooms.
