Cuban diplomat Luis Alberto Amoros stressed to the Third Commission on Legal Affairs that there cannot be double standards in the fight against international crime. "How can the US declare itself the champion of the world fight against terrorism and at the same time release the most notorious terrorist of the Western Hemisphere [Luis Posada Carriles]?" the Cuban representative wondered rhetorically. Amoros went on to say it was "inconceivable" that the US sets itself up as judge of other countries regarding drug traffic when sales of drugs in the US generate billions of dollars a year and more than 30 million of its citizens consume cocaine and 14 million are addicted to amphetamines and heroin. The diplomat also stressed "it is absurd that the US aspires to set the standard in the fight against people traffic when it has a law applied only to Cubans who arrive illegally and unsafely." "Washington has rejected Cuba's repeated and concrete proposals to cooperate bilaterally to confront drug traffic, terrorism and illegal traffic of people," he concluded. ccs/rma pgh tgj * ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us Our main website: http://www.blythe.org List Archives: http://blythe-systems.com/pipermail/nytr/ Subscribe: http://blythe-systems.com/mailman/listinfo/nytr =================================================================
