Cuba Consolidates Education in the Mountains

Santiago de Cuba, Oct 2--(ACN) In its effort to improve the education
in every part of the country, nearly 700 schools in the mountainous
region of this eastern province were equipped with computers, TV and
video players, which further contribute to the learning process of
students.

More than 44,000 students attend schools in the mountains of Santiago 
de Cuba, a region where the highest peak of Cuba, Pico Turquino, is 
located, as part of Cuba's largest mountain range, the Sierra Maestra.

Half of those schools have conventional electrical system, while the 
others receive electric power from solar panels, making it possible to 
use the audiovisual programs as teaching aids.

Thanks to the use of alternative energy-generating sources, along with 
the recent actions to improve the education system of the country 
nationwide, farmers in out of the way locations have been able to 
increase their educational level. There are five polytechnic institutes 
in the mountain region, with more than one million students. A high 
number of them are studying mountain agronomy, which ensures a trained 
labor force in the region.

There are also 32 pre-university schools (10th -12th grade) with an 
emphasis on fostering environmental education, as one of the main 
purposes of the Cuban educational system is to provide comprehensive 
education.
