The miners are being attacked by a rock creature able to tunnel through solid rock. While exploring the tunnels created by this being, the miners and crew come upon vast chambers hewn out of solid asteroid filled with silvery nodules resembling very large ball bearings. Thousands of them lay broken on the floor scattered where they had been discarded by the miners. Later, when communication had finally been established with this silicon based life, they learn these nodules were eggs..the future of the Horta lay in shambles amidst the rocks of their birthing chambers..the Mother Horta moans for the lost generations...in turn, the miners were horrified. In their ignorance they had destroyed thousands of this mother's children...never realizing they were life in search of birth. I never fail to think of this episode of Star Trek when the issue of genocide is raised. How many lives are shattered through ignorance? How many children will be destroyed? How many fail to achieve communication with the destroyers in the face of this destruction of the future finding the reality to horrible to grasp the destroyers to removed to hear? Mining practices, manufacturing processes, waste accumulations of nuclear products and byproducts, terminator technology which genetically manipulates seed so the next generation of life will never be born of the parent plant, war for oil, war for market control, starvation because life sustaining crops are no longer economically feasible in a global economy within developing nations, global warming which creates excess energy propagating killer storms and flooding, droughts, blizzards, and incredible temperature swings are signs that the next generations may not achieve birth. Please, become involved..our future depends on it.
