According to United Nations statistics cited at the event deforestation for biofuel production could put some 60 million native peoples at risk, reported Granma newspaper. Victoria Tauli-Corpuz of the Phillipines noted that the expansion of crop areas for ethanol production is pushing out indigenous communities and threatens to destroy their cultures and force them to live in urban areas. She said the forum hopes to get the UN General Assembly to approve a declaration to protect indigenous peoples from the onslaught of crop production for ethanol production, reported Prensa Latina. The use of corn, soy, palm oil and sugarcane for biofuels has been criticized by several UN agencies. * ================================================================ .NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems .
