Indigenous Summit in Guatemala

Iximche, Guatemala, Mar 26 (Prensa Latina) Under the slogan "From
resistance to power," the Third Continental Summit of Indigenous Peoples
and Nationalities kicks off in Guatemala on Monday, to analyze the main
problems of regional communities.

The ceremonial center of Iximche, capital of Kakchiqueles and a symbol of
resistance against conquest, is the venue of the meeting, attended by over
300 delegations from America and other regions of the planet.

Activities start with a ceremony of invocation by Mayan spiritual leaders
to request clarity and wisdom for all participants in the Summit.

Norma Mayo, leader of the Indigenous Movement of Ctopaxi, from Ecuador,
told Prensa Latina she expects good results and agreements from these
encounters, in which brother peoples work jointly to be strengthened.

German Casamos, from the Colombian National Indigenous Organization,
highlighted the importance of this event for all peoples of the continent,
which must take a joint position faced with neoliberal policies.

After the opening ceremony, the first panel will open with the title
"Indigenous People and Nation States," in which Guatemalans Irma Alicia
Nimatuj and Santiago Bastos and Ecuadorian Luis Macas will speak.
