Bolivian Indigenous Defend National Unity

OMASUYOS, Bolivia, January 23.-- Bolivian President Evo Morales, said the
red ponchos traditionally worn by the indigenous people of the Altiplano
highlands near Lake Titicaca are a symbol in defense of national unity,
reported Prensa Latina.

In a ceremony for the 181^st anniversary of the province of Omasuyos,
Morales recalled the history of the red ponchos that date back before the
founding of the Republic in 1825 and inspired the current uniform of the
Colorados de Bolivia regiment.

"Red ponchos to defend the nation, to defend the people's unity," said the
president who maintained that while previous governments had allowed the
country to become divided and chopped up Tupac Katari into pieces that
would be impossible for anyone to attempt now.

Morales also noted that the Armed Forces is an integral part of the mission
to safeguard the nation and that he "just like all patriotic Bolvians" is
proud of them.

In referring to Achacachi, the town of the indigenous warriors, Morales
said that among the government's programs for 2007 is the delivery of a
milk product processing plant that will create a considerable number of
jobs.

The president called on residents to fully take advantage of the
agricultural potential of the highlands.

Morales also inaugurated a local radio station, which joins the national
network of 30 community radio stations planned by the government, presented
a number of tractors for agricultural development and promised greater
support for small, local producers.
