[NYTr] Indigenous Chilean Stopped from Traveling to Bolivia Date: Sat, 21 Jan 2006 16:40:48 -0600 (CST) Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit Prensa Latina, Havana http://www.plenglish.com Chile: Indigenous Leader Prevented from Traveling to Bolivia Santiago de Chile, Jan 20 (Prensa Latina) The leader of All the Lands Council Aucan Huilcaman was taken off of a plane at Santiago International Airport when he was ready to fly to Bolivia to attend president-elect Evo Morales' inauguration ceremony. Huilcaman, who is under an arrest warrant for taking part in protests against the governmental law on native peoples, was also specially invited by Morales, who is also an indigenous, to attend his investiture ceremony. The Mapuche leader's plane was preparing for taking the LAN Chile flight to Iquique - Arica - La Paz when he was taken off the aircraft by officers members of the International Police. Huilcan and other leaders were preventing from leaving the country because of an arrest warrant stemming from their participation in protests in the Araucaria capital on January 10 when several mapuches' leaders occupied the regional administrative headquarter. The former presidential candidate was accused, along with the other people arrested, for participating in disturbances that required him to appear in court every 15 days; he is also forbidden from nearing public buildings. Huilcan said he would leave a message with the Bolivian Consulate to president-elect Morales explaining the reasons for his absence.
