Huilcaman and a group of followers occupied the mayor's office and urged President Ricardo Lagos to annul the law the head of the Council of All Lands considers colonialist and an election maneuver to benefit government candidate Michelle Bachelet. The bill calls for recognizing the existence in Chile of indigenous peoples, but ignores their rights to the land, subsoil, natural resource, participation and self-determination. Media reported the restraining order is one of three imposed by Judge Maria Teresa Villagran after Huilcaman and 17 other Mapuche leaders were charged with disorderly conduct. He will, however, be allowed to attend President-elect Evo Morales' inauguration in Bolivia on Jan 22. Huilcaman presented 39,000 signatures (an extra 4,000 under the law) to run for the presidency but the Elections Service rejected them in October because they were not confirmed by a notary. The indigenous leader claimed notaries overcharged for their services to prevent him from meeting the requirements, and urged the government and Congress to seek alternative solutions but to no avail. hr/ccs/emw/apr * ================================================================ .NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems .
