[us-water-network] Canadian Native Leaders say at least 100 Date: Sat, 29 Oct 2005 23:44:10 -0500 (CDT) X-Fingerprint: owner-imap@chumbly.math.missouri.edu-127.127 US Water Network -- posted by svarghese@iatp.org ============================================================ Reserves will have clean water, Martin vows Friday, October 28, 2005 Posted at 12:07 PM EDT Canadian Press Kitchener, Ont. - Prime Minister Paul Martin said Friday that the government will do "whatever is necessary" to make drinking water safe on Canada's native reserves, including committing more federal dollars. He said a government program already in place will provide $1.6-billion to correct what he calls a 100-year-old problem on reserves. The Prime Minister's words come on the heels of a health crisis on the Kashechewan reserve in northern Ontario, where the potential of E. coli poisoning meant drinking water had to be heavily chlorinated. The province is airlifting people out, and Ottawa is promising to relocate part of the reserve. That one move alone is estimated to cost hundred of millions of dollars, and native leaders say there are at least 100 more reserves suffering from poor water systems. When asked if more money - in addition to the $1.6 billion already allocated - would be made available, Mr. Martin said he would do "whatever is necessary." He said that a century of water problems on Canada's reserves is unacceptable and that no Canadian should have to drink dirty water. Mr. Martin the government has assessed what communities across the country are in need, but he did not say how may reserves would be helped. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20051028.wmart1028/BN Story/National/ ============================================================ View the ARCHIVES of this list at: http://lists.iatp.org/listarchive/ For help with listserv SUBSCRIPTIONS visit: http://lists.iatp.org/listarchive/subscriptions.cfm Questions, comments, concerns?
