Venezuela to Give More Land to Indigenous Communities

Caracas, Sep 23 (Prensa Latina) Next October 8 Venezuela will give 15
new collective land titles to indigenous communities as part of the
demand for ancestral rights of autochthonous peoples.

The engineer Evelyn Vasquez, member of Mission Guicaipuro and in
charge of coordinating indigenous policies, told Prensa Latina they
have been working currently on land demarcation of seven states.

The next delivery will be in the states of Apure, Delta Amacuro,
Anzoategui, Monagas, Zulia and Sucre, where most of the indigenous
population is concentrated.

Vasquez added that resources for social-productive projects in most of
15 communities would be also given the same day, to improve settlers4
life quality.

The current Venezuelan Magna Carta has meant an important advance for
respect of indigenous rights, the first time they are recognized in
the country's history.

Last August, the first six collective land titles were given to
members of Warao and Kariqa ethnic groups in the states of Anzoategui
and Monagas, with a total of 127, 000 hectares favoring 4,000
aboriginals.

According to the 2001 census, in Venezuela there are 536,863 Indians,
or 2.3 percent of the population, although experts say the real number
is bigger, since most live in isolated areas.
