Nicaragua: 112 Indigenous Communities Facing Hunger

Managua, Sep 7 (PL)--UN Development Programme (UNDP) Representative in
Nicaragua Alfredo Misael confirmed Wednesday hunger in indigenous
communities in the banks of Coco rive, to the North of the Atlantic.

Misael is member of a commission that vice president Jose Rizo chairs to
Waspam, a municipality where more than 40 thousand people live in 122
communities, lack of food due to destruction of their self-consumption by
rats, plagues and flooding.

The UN representative asserted the press that Waspan, the largest 
municipality in Nicaragua, along with Honduras is facing a hard emergency.

As a priority Misael has recommended eliminating rats for the people 
to farm their gardens and agriculture organizations provide the resources.

The UNDP official said that it was considering the possibility to 
ask for help to UN donors, World Food Program and United Nation's 
Children's Fund.

Waspam Mayor Cornelio Tevas said the situation was dreadful as 13 
thousand families are in jeopardy of death for lack of food, and are 
waiting for something to eat.

Along with calamities that miskitos are facing, authorities of 
Lempira department in Honduras, are demanding them to stop farming, not 
recognizing the indigenous right to their lands.

Waspan Elderly Council member Joaquin Suazo said that international 
agreements, also signed by Hondurans, force to respect miskitos 
determination to travel without documents throughout the region in 
searching for lands to farm.
