[NYTr] AIM Leader Demands Release of Cuban 5 Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2005 22:39:50 -0600 (CST) Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit Prensa Latina, Havana http://www.plenglish.com US Indian Leader Demands Release of Cuban Five Havana, Feb 10 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Five are unjustly jailed in the US for the sole guilt of fighting for their people, said Daniel Chang, representative of the American Indian Movement Youth. Chang arrived in Cuba to attend the release of a book on Peltiers, as part of the international campaign to spread the truth in this case, similar to that of the Cuban Five. Chang assured the US Administration has done with the Cuban Five like AIM leader Leonard Peltiers (Sioux), that serves two life sentences based on construed evidence and has been 31 years behind bars for defending the rights of his people. Chang called both situations an act of abject government fear, certain that it can lie and abuse the law. American Indians have broad experience in such causes and we will defend the Cuban Five just like our own, and we will stay together till their release. Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez were arrested in 1998 in Miami and given sentences ranging from 15 years to double life sentences for penetrating anti-Cuba terrorist organizations operating in the US. Chang met this Thursday with Cuban Young Communist League Secretary Julio Martinez, who thanked his support to the international campaign for the release of the Cuban Five and pledged to take Peltiers' case to every international forum alike. The visitor even termed an honor to relate with Cuba's youth and admires its commitment and capacity to construct a different system. As a sign of goodwill and friendship, Chang practiced the Indian ritual of purification and smoked the peace pipe with Martinez and his colleagues. ef/emw/apf/ml * Search the NYTr Archives at: http://olm.blythe-systems.com/pipermail/nytr/ To subscribe or unsubscribe or change your settings via the web, visit: http://olm.blythe-systems.com/mailman/listinfo/nytr ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org =================================================================
