Newspaper shut down after reporting Putin's alleged affair Sun, 20 Apr

The Russian tabloid newspaper that reported President Vladimir Putin was
planning to marry an Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast has been shut
down.

The Moskovski Korrespondent published rumours last weekend that
55-year-old Putin had divorced his wife of 24 years, and would marry
24-year-old Alina Kabaeva.

The rumours had been circulating around Moscow for months, but until then
no one had dared to publish them.

The Korrespondent's editor Grigori Nekhoroshev said he decided to run the
story to break a long-standing taboo under which Russian media do not
report on politicians' private lives.

The newspaper's website was taken offline on Friday, but its parent
company Artyom Artyomov claimed the publication had been halted because of
excess spending. It said the closure "has nothing to do with politics and
is solely a business decision".

Both Putin and Kabaeva have denied reports of their relationship, with
Putin saying there was "not a single word of truth" to the claims.
