TGV Internet access coming

Uninterrupted wifi service is promised -- at a price -- for computer
users traveling on TGV trains between Switzerland and France.

Internet access will be available starting next year on the high-
speed trains between Switzerland and France run by SNCF, the French
state-owned railway. The new computer and multimedia service was
successfully tested on a TGV on the Strasbourg-Basel route yesterday.
Wireless connections are envisaged for all the Lyria TGVs serving
Switzerland, including Geneva and Lausanne. The service will also be
extended to TGVs serving the east of France, Germany and Luxemburg,
a spokesman from the SNCF said.

The Internet project, budgeted at SFr32 million, promises
uninterrupted wireless access to computer users on trains traveling
up to 320 kilometers an hour. The service will not be free, however.
While the SNCF has made the service available for free during tests,
it plans to charge a fee for connections when the system is up and
running next year.

The sum has yet to be determined but SFr8 (five euros) an hour has
been suggested. The access is made available through antennas placed
on carriages that link with a satellite to provide seamless coverage.
Germany's Deutsche Bahn introduced a program a year ago that provides
Internet access on all its ICE trains. No word yet on whether Swiss
Federal Railways (CFF) plans to follow suit.
