Dear Roger,

Operation Migaloo continues to be an outstanding success as my crew and I keep the illegal Japanese whalers on the run. As the ice thickens and the weather worsens, the end of the whaling season draws near. Over the next few weeks we intend to continue to stop the whalers from killing anymore whales. After we return from the whaling campaign, we will then set our sights on defending the seals in Canada while we continue our ongoing work on behalf of all ocean wildlife including sharks and the fragile ecosystem in the Galapagos.

The Steve Irwin has the Whalers on the Run

For nearly a full week, Sea Shepherd's ship the Steve Irwin has kept the Japanese whaling fleet on the run. Having previously planted tracking devices on one of the whaling vessels, we're able to follow them every step of the way. When they zig, we zag and while they're running, they can't whale. Operation Migaloo and Operation Migaloo II has been the longest ever harassment of a whaling operation since illegal whaling activities began in 1986.

Sea Shepherd Announces Seal Defense Campaign 2008!

Seal and Farley Mowat Captain Paul Watson and some of his crew will not rest after defending whales when they return to Australia after three and a half months of chasing and harassing Japanese whaling ships, and will instead continue on to defend baby seals.

Within days of returning to Australia in late March, they will be flying halfway around the world to Bermuda where Sea Shepherd's other ship the Farley Mowat is docked. From there they will head North into the ice packs off Eastern Canada to defend nearly 300,000 baby harp seals from the ruthless clubs of Canadian sealers.

Tragedy Occurs During Shark Dive: Shark Angels Express their Condolences

Sea Shepherd Executive Director, Kim McCoy, and all members of the Shark Angels alliance extend their heartfelt condolences to the family of Markus Groh, a scuba diver who died on February 24 after an accident involving a shark in the Bahamas. They are deeply saddened by this loss that hits very close to home, as the Angels were recently hosted on board the same boat from which Groh was diving.

While heartbroken over the recent incident, the Shark Angels encourage the public to maintain a positive view of sharks. "Contrary to sensationalized media reports, sharks are not mindless killing machines and do not view humans as a source of food," said McCoy. "2007 statistics report only one human death related to a shark bite worldwide. In contrast, over 100,000,000 sharks were killed by humans in 2007, pushing these environmentally significant animals to the brink of extinction."

Galapagos Update

Sea Shepherd Galapagos continues to do good work in conjunction with the Galapagos National Park and the Ecuadorian National Police. With a new, more conviently located office Sea Shepherd Galapagos continues to educate the public about the crisis concerning sharks and is helping create a new program with police dogs to sniff out illegal shark fins and sea cucumbers.

This Whale Defense Campaign, Operation Migaloo, has been one of the most successful Sea Shepherd campaigns for the whales in our 30 year history.
