Dear Roger,

Sea Shepherd's ship, the Steve Irwin, continues to uphold international conservation law in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary and I am happy to report that in the last 13 days, no whales have been killed by Japanese harpoons.

When two of our crewmembers were taken hostage on board an illegal whaling vessel last week, the world's attention was focused on the plight of the whales and Japan's supposed "research"- the annual illegal murder of nearly 1,000 whales. Now that our crewmembers have been returned, we're continuing our pursuit of the whaling fleet...
Steve Irwin Crew Released by the Japanese
Benjamin Potts and Giles Lane Safely ReturnBenjamin Potts of Australia and Giles Lane of the United Kingdom were taken hostage by the Japanese whalers aboard the Yushin Maru No. 2 last week after they boarded the vessel to deliver a letter to the captain. They were seized and held captive for over 48 hours before the Australian government intervened and delivered the hostages safely back to the Steve Irwin, as Sea Shepherd refused to comply with the conditions for release established by the whalers.

"Using hostages to make demands is the hallmark of terrorism and Sea Shepherd has no interest in negotiating with terrorist groups," said Captain Paul Watson.

Steve Irwin Bushwacks Japanese Spy Ship
Sea Shepherd Surprises Spy ShipFor over a week, the Steve Irwin has been shadowed by the Fukuyoshi Maru No. 68. The ship is not a part of the whaling fleet but appeared to be keeping tabs on Sea Shepherd's movements in pursuit of the whalers. This week, Sea Shepherd surprised the vessel with our zodiac and helicopter in order to expose their activity. The vessel has not been seen since and the Steve Irwin has continued searching for the illegal whalers.

SSCS in the News
Benjamin Potts tied up by the JapaneseWith the hostage situation on the Yushin Maru No. 2 last week, Sea Shepherd was able to bring Japanese illegal whaling to the world's attention. The whole week that Sea Shepherd engaged with the whalers was a week during which no whales were killed. Now the chase is on to keep illegal whaling in the spotlight and end Japanese whaling in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary once and for all.

Sea Shepherd is on a quest to protect the greatest treasure of the seas: the great whales. We are obsessed with stopping the Cetacean Death Star, that vicious cruel killing machine otherwise known as the Nisshin Maru, and her fleet of boats armed with explosive harpoons. We know that if we kill the whales, the sharks, the seals, and the sea turtles, we will destroy the very foundation of life in the oceans. Thank you for your support of our efforts to end illegal whaling. Without you, our efforts would not be possible, and the murder of the whales would go unchallenged on the high seas.
