BBC: The Century Of The Self Date: Tue, 22 Jan 2008 10:46:08 -0600 (CST) http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-678466363224520614 Here's a BBC series that you should watch as soon as possible. I'd like to see some critiquing done. I was gripped by the content; I recognize its excellence as a production and current relevance, but I also see it as a purgative - a heavy dose of salts - a declaration which strengthes whatever pessimism we already have about our societal future. Four hours of BBC video. The compressed theme is that just as focus groups are used to determine what consumers want in the way of goods, so focus groups are the tool of the hierarchy to learn and categorize the aspirations of individuals and therefore as a tool to make a "free election" winnable by the dropping of moral values and the offer of goodies to swing voters. What's reinforced is the picture of a selfish population individuals unwilling to pay taxes for the benefit of others. But what's missing is any analysis of hierarchically imposed violence, i.e war and military action. Michael
