Mike Gravel Versus MSNBC Date: Thu, 1 Nov 2007 22:29:26 -0500 (CDT) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gravel For President 2008 Event Advisory ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Senator Mike Gravel's Alternative Debate "Gravel '08 Before It's Too Late" (Courtesy of a family of Gravel supporters) Last night our campaign showed corporate media that we will not be silenced. Hundreds of you came out in Philadelphia for our "alternative debate" and thousands more watched the video which we streamed live across the Internet. For those of you who missed the video, you can watch it online here: http://tinyurl.com/2w7ubn (There was a problem with the audio for the first two minutes of the video, but it clears up after a little bit.) 'Where's Mike?' Isn't it amazing that corporate warmonger GE and its media outlet NBC could suddenly drop me from the debates, and none of my opponents would even comment on it? It's like Stalin's Russia when someone would just stop showing up for work but no one in the office dared to ask; "Hey, what ever happened to Ivan?" What does it say about the state of American politics when our presidential candidates don't have the guts to question a TV network? Sticks and Carrots? It was great to see the other presidential candidates finally challenge Senator Hillary Clinton for supporting the march toward war with Iran. For months I've been educating the public about this phony crisis. My many Huffington posts [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0015LsaIKlitGgif2xIZqP2ChOF0fiSaCcwGFR5acPPOE4rb-C9xCbUA9wOrj4nWJoKuXDprCLjWJjduk9mBuCGIOdXyN9grHFTN6jUPyffSgSEqjlWdZZHsjcUbDK6gFhmLdUjdMY9tWcu1pmCM1bA9FN2SHXf7hQJQ91Sjj4g4m05oGC3ZRgbe1Y8CkwqaOWgvEam-b19z9c=] and my "I'm ashamed of you Hillary" [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0015LsaIKlitGhkgi6SM4IdZCufqe03gaLz6_vQe_mfIkp2dXNAa1K7CVNy-3IN1pkd6WOn7en0L_KlgtSCzSnBFuEs5ctCe9oJc1Z0qvfLWQnYmTyjPbHJNzzYV0ArsdlqOxtyBPvL9P8Vve6eLEisxA==]moment in the last debate got me in big trouble with the power elite. But was last night's Clinton-bashing based on genuine disagreement or just political calculation? Obama, after all, was not even present to cast his critical vote on the Kyl-Lieberman amendment. And last night I still heard a lot of tough talk from almost all the candidates about never allowing Iran to go nuclear, keeping all options on the table and "sticks and carrots." Sticks and carrots? Maybe a good way to start diplomacy would be to show the Iranians some respect and stop referring to them as donkeys that must be bribed or beaten into compliance. Hatchetman Once again NBC host Tim Russert assumed his role as the Establishment's Hatchetman. In the last NBC debate, Russert marginalized me by repeatedly limiting my time to speak. This time he clocked Rep. Dennis Kucinich with a question about UFOs. When is Russert going to ask Senator Clinton about her questionable fundraising or the donations she has received from warmongering corporations like GE? Even better, when is Russert going to apologize to the American people for his own failures as a journalist? Remember: Russert never challenged administration flacks in the lead up to Iraq. He was one of Scooter Libby's go-to journalists. Now he's joined the drum beat for war with Iran. Last night he repeatedly pestered the candidates: "Will you pledge that when you're President, Iranwill not develop nukes?" Was that a question? A twisted mantra? Or was it a demand for profession of faith that we need to bomb Iran? Talk about trying to undermine diplomacy. Enough of Russert! On a brighter note, last night was a truly positive step forward for my campaign. However, staging the event was expensive for me. As I noted last night, the entire event cost us $20,000, a pittance to moneyed candidates like Senators Clinton and Obama, but a significant cost to me.
