It's been two weeks since the Steve Irwin set sail and our courageous volunteer crew are actively seeking out the illegal whalers. This will not be the first Christmas at sea for many of our veteran crew members. My crew and I are preparing to celebrate the holidays in the remote waters of the Southern Ocean, knowing that the Australian government has sent a customs vessel to observe the illegal slaughter of whales by the Japanese. My holiday message and our response to the government of Australia's recent announcement are below. Keep reading for additional updates on our efforts to protect ocean wildlife in other parts of the world...

Australia is going to send the Customs vessel Oceanic Viking to monitor the Japanese for 20 days. And just so the Japanese do not get overly offended, they are going to remove their guns.  Additionally, they are going to take pictures of the whales being killed.

"There is very little that is new here," said Captain Paul Watson from onboard the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin off the coast of Antarctica. "The Australian government is going to take some pictures of the Japanese whalers killing whales but will do nothing to intervene against the slaughter. This is simply more pictures, more talk and more posturing, in short more of the same approaches that have totally failed for the last twenty-one years."

Texas Night Club Urged to Release Captive Sharks

 

QUA interiorThe QUA Bottle Lounge in Austin, Texas features a concrete shark tank, covered by a 3-inch layer of acrylic, as the club's centerpiece. Captain Watson and Executive Director Kim McCoy were appalled to learn of this facility, and even more surprised to find that QUA boasts on its website that it is "perhaps the world's first nightclub and lounge designed to raise awareness of global environmental concerns and marine wildlife preservation." 
 
Sea Shepherd has written a letter to QUA urging and offering to facilitate the release of these sharks.  We encourage you to respectfully voice your opinions to QUA as well. 
 
Sea Shepherd is on a quest to protect the greatest treasure of the seas - the great whales. We are obsessed with stopping the Cetacean Death Star, that viciously cruel killing machine otherwise known as the Nisshin Maru, and her fleet of boats armed with explosive harpoons. We know that if we kill the whales, the sharks, the seals, and the sea turtles, we will destroy the very foundation of life in the oceans. Thank you for your support as we work to end whaling. Without you, our efforts would not be possible, and we hope you think of our mission in the far away ocean as you celebrate this holiday season.
