Such Ignorance is Hardly Bliss

White House spokesperson Dana Perino apparently doesnB4t know there was
a missile crisis in 1962, which brought the world to the brink of
nuclear war.

Cubanow.- Dana Perino was in a panic before the White House press
corps. George BushB4s spokesperson felt her legs tremble. My God! WhatB4s
this guy talking about? bThe Missile Crisisb? Cuba... the Soviet
Union... Kennedy... Kruschev... Fidel Castro. She tried to deflect the
answer toward another point and, relieved, managed to do so b although
somewhat incoherently.

When she got home she asked her puzzled husband: "Peter, tell me, was
it something like the Bay of Pigs?" Days later she confessed on a radio
program that she did not know of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis b which
Cuba calls the October Crisis, because it covers more elements b and
that the world had been on the brink of nuclear war between the two
super powers of that time: the Soviet Union and the United States.

Who is this woman who speaks for the U.S. president? Dana Perino is 35
years old b in other words, she was born 10 years after the crisis that
touched the world when then President John F. Kennedy forced Moscow to
withdrew ballistic missiles that it had installed in Cuba and aimed
toward main U.S. cities. Days before, United States intelligence and
U.S. spy planes had warned that the Soviets were on the verge of
completing several medium range rockets launch pads capable of reaching
New York City and that the nuclear warheads were already on Cuban
territory.

Kennedy demanded that the rockets be immediately withdrawn or he would
bombard the island and thousands of U.S. soldiers would disembark to
destroy the missiles. The Russian premier counted on 30,000 or so men
equipped with modern weapons to defend Cuban territory along with many
thousands more poorly armed Cubans who were nevertheless willing to die
fighting for their country and cause any invading force very high
casualties in the process.

Kruschev eventually agreed to withdraw the missiles in exchange for the
promise that the United States would never attack Cuba, along with
other secondary agreements. The crisis lasted some ten days and is
remembered as the greatest danger ever to threaten humankind.

The current reference to the crisis happened on October 26, when
Russian President Vladimir Putin recalled the connection with the
crisis and U.S. plans to install a missile defense system in Europe
that would cause an international arms imbalance.

Actions such as these gave rise to the Missile Crisis, said Putin. Days
later a journalist asked Dana Perino what her thoughts were on PutinB4s
comments, and she was unable to respond because she did not know to
what crisis he was refering. After several incoherent words, she
hestatingly concluded that, well, I think that... the president, and the
president has already said, that, well... we can work together.

The White House spokesperson does not know her history b even when it
involves the most dramatic moments that occurred barely ten years
before she was born, and in which her country had a leading role.

What does she know of other more distant and less prominent, but
likewise important, conflicts in terms of world history? What does Bush
know?
