Dear Roger,

After months of preparation and hard work by Sea Shepherd staff and volunteer crew, Operation Migaloo is under way. Our newly renamed whale defense ship, the Steve Irwin, has embarked on its mission to defend the whales in the Antarctica Whale Sanctuary. Keep reading for more details and for other exciting news from the world's premier ocean defense organization.
Sea Shepherd ship renamed the Steve Irwin
Terri Irwin has granted the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society permission to rename its ship formerly known as the Robert Hunter in honor of her late husband, Steve Irwin.

Sea Shepherd is proud to partner with Terri Irwin to launch Operation Migaloo, as she and Steve have been world renowned for their conservation work. Terri knows that Steve would have been extremely honoured to be acknowledged in this way, as he shared Sea Shepherd's passion for saving whales.

The ship was sent off by a large group of Sea Shepherd supporters and members of the press. Terri Irwin was also in attendance to see the ship depart. Over the next few weeks, the ship will travel to Antarctica where it will hunt down the whalers and end their illegal activity.

Shark Angels project takes flight

Robert Hunter Chasing Nisshin Maru

Building on Rob Stewart's award-winning film, Sharkwater, Sea Shepherd Executive Director Kim McCoy has joined forces with Julie Andersen of Shark Savers and Alison Kock of the Save Our Seas Foundation to form the Shark Angels alliance.  The Shark Angels, accompanied by Stewart, recently began production of a short film which will feature the three women diving in open water surrounded by tiger sharks.

Tiger sharks are widely reputed as among the most aggressive of all large predatory sharks.  By showing the softer side of these magnificent creatures, the Shark Angels hope to dispel societal misunderstandings about sharks and educate the public on the urgent need to defend them against human greed and exploitation.

There is much work to be done, but with your help, we will continue to fight for marine wildlife all over the world. After so much hard work preparing for Operation Migaloo, your strong support has enabled us to embark on our fourth Antarctic mission for the whales fully prepared to oppose illegal Japanese whaling. The whales are counting on us to defend them, and I thank you for getting us there.
