The funeral will be open to the public. On Thursdays, starting with October 4th, there will be demonstrations at 12 noon on the steps of Oakland City Hall to express outrage at the murder of Gary by Sgt. Gonzales, who is currently still on-duty. A march on the police station in which Sgt. The latest move on the U.S. neo-liberal agenda for Latin America has met widespread resistance in Costa Rica. Anti-CAFTA marches and protests there led to the national referendum and the resignation of a vice president. A solidarity event with the anti-CAFTA resistance in Costa Rica will be held at Station 40 on Sunday, September 30th, at 6pm. http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/09/29/18450567.php 15 Years of Critical Mass 09/29/07 - sf For just a couple of hours on the last Friday of each month, hundreds of cyclists informally ride together to claim the streets which are normally ruled by automobiles. The gathering is part celebration and part peaceful protest. The messages of the event: that we still have a choice to live our lives in a way that is more thoughtful of the world's resources, to live in a way that is more socially nurturing of life and health, and to live our lives with more joy. Workers, some with their families, were joined by student allies for a rally to send a strong message to UC administration that AFSCME, the Student Worker Coalition for Justice and graduate students organized with UAW Local 2865 are united in demandin g that UC prioritize workers, students and their families. http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/09/28/18450365.php UAW Files Charges Against UC Administration, Will Strike if Necessary Unfair Labor Practice Charges Filed Against University of California 09/28/07 - labor | education | santacruz United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 2865, the Union representing over 12,000 Teaching Assistants, Tutors, and Readers throughout the University of California (UC) system, is in the process of filing dozens of unfair labor practice (ULPs) charges against the UC. The Union may call a strike over these ULPs if the charges are not resolved and agreement reached by the expiration of the current contract, September 30th. UAW 2865 recently released a public statement which had over 6,500 signatures from members. http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/09/28/18450338.php HRC Sweatshop Playland at Castro Street Fair Gay Shame and LAGAI Sponsor Playland to Point Out HRC's Lack of Labor Politics 09/28/07 - globalization | lgbtqi Gay Shame SF and LAGAI-Queer Insurrection will sponsor an "HRC sweatshop play land" for kids of all ages at the 19th and Castro Streets during the Castro Street Fair in San Francisco on Sunday, October 7th. The playland will ask "how can the Human Rights Campaign claim to be for the rights of humans, while cheering on corporate culture and selling goods manufactured in sweatshops?" Organizers will point out that corporations such as Coors, Nike, Chevron, and Merck aim to maximize profits, even at the expe nse of workers' safety and human rights. The playland, which will be for kids of all ages, will include a sewing machine, a button press, a paint fume bouncy tent, and more. http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/09/28/18450332.php SEIU Security Worker Protest Security Workers Demand Liveable wages and Affordable Healthcare 09/28/07 - labor San Francisco’s security workers took to the streets September 24th through September 28th for a week of direct action to demand that the city’s wealthiest property owners, including Shorenstein, Morgan Stanley and Hines, give them a living wage and decent health care benefits. Coalition Brings Hip Hop Show to counterPULSE 09/28/07 - arts On Saturday September 22nd, over 150 people came together from across California to participate in Lyrical Revolt, an event put on by the Youth & Student A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition at Counter Pulse in San Francisco. The night was filled with politically conscious Hip Hop, spoken word, and speeches from such organizations as the Brown Berets of Watsonville and Youth Alive. http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/09/28/18450285.php DEA Targets East Bay Supplier of Edible Medical Cannabis Products Federal Agents Deny Patients Access to Edible Medical Cannabis By Raiding Tainted 09/27/07 - drugwar On September 26th, the DEA raided five locations that it claimed were connected to Tainted, Inc., which is a supplier of medical cannabis "edibles" that can be found in dozens of medical marijuana dispensaries in California. Heavily armed federal agents seized cannabis plants and medicinal edibles, arrested three people and killed at least one employee's dog. Edible cannabis products provide an alternative to smoking cannabis and are preferred by many patients. The products made by Tainted, Inc. are available only through medical cannabis dispensaries and carry prominent warning labels. http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/09/27/18450181.php Eric McDavid Found Guilty Sentencing for Eric McDavid on December 6th 09/27/07 - police | centralvalley On September 27th, the jury in the case of United States vs. Eric McDavid returned a verdict of "guilty." Eric faces five to twenty years in federal prison. His fellow defendants had accepted plea deals from the government and testified in the case. McDavid's lawyer argued that he was a victim of entrapment by "Anna" because of the money and help that she had provided. The sentencing is scheduled for Thursday, December 6th.
