Sowell cited Neo-Nazis' actions as example of "racial hype game" surrounding Jena 6 case
In his September 25 syndicated column on the so-called Jena Six case, Thomas Sowell asserted that "[r]acial hype has replaced all rational discussion," claiming that "the Jena episode has shown that two can play the racial hype game." As an example of such "racial hype," Sowell cited the publishing of "the telephone numbers and home addresses of all the young blacks involved in the school incident" on a neo-Nazi website. The Washington Post reported in a September 22 article that the posting on the Neo-Nazi website encourages readers to "get in touch [with the black teenagers], and let them know justice is coming." The article further reported that the "FBI is investigating to see whether the posting violates federal laws." Read more

MSNBC's Scarborough highlighted O'Reilly's comments about Sylvia's in Harlem
On the September 25 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, host Joe Scarborough, co-anchor Mika Brzezinski, and guest host Willie Geist discussed Fox News host Bill O'Reilly's recent comment, documented by Media Matters for America, that he, in Scarborough's words, "couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between a black restaurant and a white restaurant," after a recent trip to Harlem's famous restaurant Sylvia's. Scarborough twice played audio clips of O'Reilly's comments, made on the September 19 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show. Scarborough called the remarks "shocking" and "fascinating," and added, "I'm sure we're going to be hearing more about that throughout the day." Scarborough also highlighted O'Reilly's comment that everyone at the restaurant was "tremendously respectful," to which Geist responded: "And Sylvia's of all places, which is like world famous, great restaurant. He was still surprised." From the September 25 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe: Read more

On the September 24 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, during the weekly "Body Language" segment, which, according to host Bill O'Reilly, "has been switched to Mondays because of popular demand," Fox News body language expert Tonya Reiman asserted that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) exhibited "evil laughter" during her recent Fox News Sunday interview with host Chris Wallace. After playing video clips of Clinton laughing at different moments during the interview, O'Reilly asserted: "Well, she looked like she's having a swell time." Reiman replied: "Oh, contrived, contrived. That was the first word that came to mind." O'Reilly then asked: "[Y]ou mean, those laughs weren't genuine?" to which Reiman responded: "I saw some evil laughter." "Evil?" O'Reilly asked. "Evil laughter," Reiman repeated. Read more

Matthews revisited Yankees comments to claim Clinton "tried hard to prove she was a Noo Yawker"
The Chris Matthews Show aired footage of a 1999 interview on NBC's Today in which Sen. Hillary Clinton said that she has "always been" a fan of the New York Yankees as evidence that Clinton, according to Matthews, "tried hard to prove she was a Noo Yawker." Following the clip, Matthews said: "I just love the way Katie Couric went at her there. 'Come on, how many hats you wearing, babe?' I just think that was great." But evidence supports the claim that Clinton has, in fact, been a longtime Yankees fan. Read more

Reliable Sources panel dismissed Rather claims, but left out other times when CBS allegedly placated White House
During a discussion of Dan Rather's lawsuit against CBS, CNN's Howard Kurtz asked if it was "plausible" that CBS made Rather "a scapegoat to placate the Bush administration" over the controversial 60 Minutes II report about President Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard, as Rather alleges. Kurtz's guests -- conservative radio host Laura Ingraham and former CBS Evening News executive producer Rome Hartman -- disputed Rather's assertion. But neither Kurtz nor his guests mentioned two other instances in which CBS allegedly acted to placate the White House in 2004. Read more

Fox News lashed out at media criticism of O'Reilly's racially charged comments
During the September 25 edition of CNN Newsroom, co-host Don Lemon and anchor Rick Sanchez discussed the recent statement by Fox News host Bill O'Reilly that he was surprised "there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant [in Harlem] and any other restaurant in New York City ... even though [Sylvia's is] run by blacks." Sanchez stated that "every African-American that I've talked to since this -- and my God, have I gotten a bevy of phone calls on this, inside and outside the business -- people are actually offended. They ... call this a subtle type of racism. It's not the 'hit you over the head with a hammer' type; it's the 'velvet glove' type." He then said that, during a September 24 phone conversation, O'Reilly "didn't want any part of it" and "was screaming the entire conversation," adding, "He was not happy with me." As Media Matters for America noted, on the September 24 edition of CNN's Out in the Open, Sanchez also recounted his "animated" conversation with O'Reilly, saying that O'Reilly denied any "racial intent" in his comments and described the story as "a hatchet job by Media Matters."
