At the meeting, Madrigal mentioned an incident he witnessed last Halloween during the massive police presence which suggested the possibility of racial profiling going on. http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/09/18/18448142.php Blackwater Security banned from Iraq Iraqi Government Boots Blackwater USA 09/17/07 - antiwar | iraq On Monday September 17th Iraq's Interior Ministry revoked the license of Blackwater USA and demanded that all employees leave the country. The ban followed a Sunday gunbattle in Baghdad that left eight civilians dead. The Interior Ministry said authorities will prosecute any foreign contractors found to have used excessive force and "all those responsible for Sunday's killing will be referred to Iraqi justice." http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/09/17/18447974.php Protesters Revoke Woodfin Permit Emeryville Hotel Refuses to Pay Back Wages to Workers 09/17/07 - labor A spirited and festive crowd descended upon Emeryville's posh Woodfin Hotel Saturday morning, September 15th. The crowd gathered to announce and symbolically enforce the revocation of the hotel's permit, claiming that the hotel had failed to meet its conditional operating permit by refusing to pay $250,000 in back wages to workers, and a $50,000 fine to the City of Emeryville. This was the culmination of a lengthy and successful campaign waged by the East Bay A lliance for a Sustainable Economy (EB ASE). http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/09/17/18447972.php Family and Community Demonstrate Support at Bail Hearings; Four Released First Four of SF 8 Are Out on Bail 09/16/07 - police San Francisco 8 defendants Harold Taylor, Ray Boudreaux, Richard O'Neal, and Richard Brown have all been freed on bail. Bail arrangements are in the final stages for Hank Jones and Francisco Torres. On Sunday, September 23rd, the SF Print Collective will exhibit new work, and artist Emory Douglas will give a presentation and sign books at a fundraiser for the SF 8, from 4-7 pm at the Center for Political Education in San Francisco. Protests and peace rallies also took place in many cities across the United States. Thousands of people gathered at Crissy Field to spell out the words "IMPEACH NOW!" in 100 foot-tall letters. Versions of this same event attracted 1,000 people in January, and 1,500 in April. http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/09/14/18447515.php Eric McDavid is Given Commissary Again; Trial Continues Confidential Source/FBI Informant Anna Testifies Against Eric McDavid 09/12/07 - police | centralvalley On September 11th, supporters learned that Eric McDavid has been given commissary again. This is seen as "the first step towards a stable vegan diet for Eric." Supporters are asked to continue to call the jail to request that Eric be given vegan meals. In court on September 11th, US Attorney Steve Lapham asked questions of the government informant known as "Anna," who was sworn in without her name being spoken out loud. The St. Peters Housing Committee called for the vigil to protest a variety of legal attacks against immigrants that have taken the form of raids, Social Security "No-Match Letters," English-only policies, increased fees for citizenship applications, and attempts to eliminate family-based immigration. http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/09/09/18446478.php September 11th March and Rally to Ban Tasers in San Jose Police Electroshock Weapons Have Killed Five People in San Jose Since 2004 09/08/07 - police | southbay Taser survivors, civil and human rights advocates, and cultural performers came together on Tuesday, September 11th to kick off a campaign to ban tasers in San Jose. People gathered at 5:00pm outside of the District Attorney's Office at 70 West Hedding St. From there, participants marched to the San Jose Police Department. A final rally was held at City Hall, 200 E.
