News from IPA Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2007 18:30:21 -0500 (CDT) September 17, 2007 Dear Friend of the Institute for Public Accuracy, Wouldn't it be great if every time you turned on the TV news the report featured analysis from Phyllis Bennis on the Middle East or Antonia Juhasz on corporate globalization... or Ross Gelbspan or George Monbiot on global warming... or Heather Boushey on domestic poverty? That's the kind of widening of media discourse that IPA is working to accomplish each day. Here's how we're doing. Just this year, due to IPA's media outreach, articulate sources have appeared on outlets such as CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, NPR, and the BBC as well as on large numbers of radio stations across the country and on media outlets around the world. Newspapers phoning for interviews have included the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal and many other dailies. After being featured on one of our recent releases, James Paul, executive director of the Global Policy Forum, appeared as a guest on dozens of radio stations to discuss the toll that the Iraq war was taking on the civilian population. He thanked us for bringing the question of oil in Iraq to a broad audience through media interviews. "Here was a central factor in the war and everyone was looking the other way for three years!" said Paul. "Finally today, thanks largely to your steady interest in the topic, it is getting the coverage it needs. Many researchers and campaigners are working on it, the public is aware, and it is even beginning to be discussed seriously in Washington. Iraq oil is definitely on the political map. Bravo IPA!" While we are expanding the scope of the media debate on the Iraq war, we are also exposing the mainstream media's role in generating public support for the war. The release of the film "War Made Easy" in tandem with IPA's national "Learn History and Change It" campaign continues to gain political traction. There have been well over 100 screenings already, in theaters that have attracted audiences of 200-500 people, in churches, public libraries and schools. Hundreds of thousands of others have heard and seen portions of "War Made Easy" on TV and radio. With the national debate over war policy heating up, including the specter of military strikes against Iran, your support would sustain our capacity to continue our "War Made Easy" campaign nationwide. IPA is a bridge between the dynamic political landscape of the Internet and corporate mass media. Utilizing information and analysis that goes out on the web yet never reaches most of the population, IPA has become one of the most important institutions that conveys what progressives are writing and reading on the Internet to the general public through the mainstream media. The need for such media outreach is greater than ever in the months ahead. In a wide range of policy areas -- from diplomacy and military intervention to global warming to domestic concerns such as civil liberties, social programs and health care -- the Institute for Public Accuracy is able to bypass corporate media filters and reach millions of Americans by arranging radio, TV and print interviews with articulate hard-hitting policy analysts and activists.
